As Alberta’s economy languishes over the next several months and potentially years, we would like to remind business owners of the importance of not cutting costs at the expense of health and safety. Various sources have speculated that many companies are cutting non-revenue generating services, such as safety, in order to save money in the downturn. This is not the answer! We must remember the importance of every person arriving home safe to their families every day! It will not save your company money if your WCB rates increase, it will not win you new contracts if your recordable injury rate is high, and it will certainly not raise morale seeing more incidents on site! There is a potential that nothing will happen as a result of making cuts to your health and safety program, but a question to ask yourself is “Can you live with the varying consequences that come from neglecting the duty to ensure your employees well-being?”
