Jingle bells, Jingle bells! Happy Holidays from Kasa Consulting. We are wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
There are a few items to be aware to ensure your health and safety, and the safety of other, this holiday season.
1- It is officially the darkest time of the year! The sun is going down before you’re getting home from work, and children are outside playing, often in dark snowsuits. Pay extra attention when driving through residential zones, watching out for children playing, stray toboggans, and rogue snowballs!
2- Further attention is needed when driving through residential zones. Some homeowners… are you one of them??… have truly amazing light displays. While it can be tempting to gape at the amazing technicolour exhibits that are some peoples’ homes, it is key to remember to keep your eye on the road! Not just because there might be pedestrians, but there may be oncoming drivers who are too enthralled with the beautiful lights to focus on the road ahead of them.
3- Holiday season means party after party. If you are planning to imbibe in the spiked eggnog at theses gatherings, always ensure you have transportation arranged to get home safely. Also remember that showing up for work a day after one of these parties could inhibit your ability to work safely your ability to remain focused on your tasks!
4- Watch out for fire hazards! Around the holidays, fire hazards increase. The oven is always on, candles are being lit, fireplaces are ablaze, and some impressive people still go old school and have candles in their Christmas trees! Never leave the fires and candles burning unattended and ensure your oven timer is working!
5- Poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly are common when it comes to decorating. However, just because humans like them, does not mean your furry friends do. These plants are toxic to animals, and it is key that you keep your pets away from them!
6- Practice kitchen safety. Surfaces are hot! Knives are everywhere! A giant, raw turkey is slip-and-sliding around your counter as you try to dress it. Cleaning up as you go is a great way to ensure everyone in the kitchen stays injury free this season!
Have a wonderful finale to your 2019 year, and we look forward to working with you in 2020!

For Halloween Preparations:
Do plan a route ahead of time. For little ones trick-or-treating alone, check-in times are a good idea.
Do keep your pets in a quiet place. Too much excitement from strangers and costumed visitors might stress them out.
Do make sure that your driveway and walkway are free of ice.
Don’t leave any potentially hazardous items such as tools or extension cords in your yard, driveway or front walkway.
For Trick-or-Treaters:
Do trick-or-treat with friends, and stick together.
Do double check both directions when crossing the street. Both drivers and pedestrians have the responsibility to be vigilant.
Don’t wear dark costumes without any items, such as glow sticks or lights, that add visibility.
Don’t visit houses that do not have lights on. There will be plenty that are decorated and ready to hand out treats!
For Drivers:
Do expect trick-or-treaters to be jaywalking, crossing driveways and alleyways, and appearing from behind parked cars. Pay extra attention and drive slowly through busy neighbourhoods.
Do take extra care to make eye contact with pedestrians. Costumes and masks can obstruct childrens’ view when crossing the road.
Do be sure to look out for trick-or-treaters in dark costumes. They may not have something light or glowing to make them visible.
Don’t use your phone while driving. Pay attention to the road, pedestrians, and cars around you.
Don’t drink and drive. If you are attending a Halloween party, make arrangements to get home safely or stay over.
Help keep my kids and your kids safe out there tonight! Happy Halloween

As someone who has worked in the social services industry for a decade, I have come to appreciate companies who choose to help their community. Hull Services, where I worked assisting children and families, would not have been able to operate without the assistance of many sponsors and volunteers in the Calgary community. Although my career path has taken a turn in recent years, I am still eager to keep community spirit alive. At Kasa Consulting, Cam and I have committed to helping our community in a variety of ways, and look forward do doing more as our company grows and evolves.
One of the ways in which we support our community is through sponsoring sports teams. One of our employees, Alex Entz, plays on a Fernie softball team called Faces Loaded, and with our assistance, they were able to obtain new team jerseys. We also sponsor a basketball team in the Central Alberta Senior Men’s Basketball Association, as a way of showing one of our valued clients – Colter Energy Services – that we support them in more than their health and safety initiatives.
Another way we show our commitment to community is through donating necessary goods for the less fortunate in Calgary and Edmonton. One of our clients, DistributionNOW, spends a considerable amount of time every year collecting donations on behalf of Inn from the Cold. Inn from the Cold is an organization that collects warm clothing, accessories, diapers, and toiletries for those in need, and thanks to DistributionNOW, we have been made aware of this great organization that we have supported for the past few years.
Finally, I am a member of Calgary Women in Energy (CWIE). As part of this group, I have assisted in many of their planned, charitable events. Over the years of my involvement with the CWIE, I have served lunch and dinner at the Calgary Drop-in Centre, participated in a blood drive with Canadian Blood Services, volunteered at a charity golf tournament for the Louise Dean School, a school which allows young mothers, both current and expectant, to complete their education, and taken part in a Stuff-A-Purse drive for women in need.
Volunteering is something the Kasa team does throughout the year. If you would like to participate in any of the initiatives we are currently involved in, or will be involved in, or if you would like to include Kasa in any of your community spirit initiatives, please feel free to call or email me anytime.
